Abilities
Character Abilities: While not possessing any supernatural or high technological abilities, John spent decades training himself into a man of peak human physical condition. In terms of strength, speed, endurance, stamina, and reflexes, John has honed his body into a lethal killing machine, to the point where despite being into middle-age (Keanu Reeves was 50 while filming the first film, though I’m playing John as a little bit younger than that) John can easily match up against multiple opponents a decade or more his junior. He can also take a beating like few others; in the span of perhaps two weeks (the time from Chapter 1 to 3) John suffers multiple injuries including multiple hits from cars, and ended with him falling off the roof of the Continental Hotel after being shot point-blank in the gut, but always managed to get back up and keep fighting, though he need four months to recover before going after the High Table in Chapter 4, which is still an immensely compressed timeframe for the amount of punishment he went through).
Character Skills: A more formal list of John’s extensive list of skills, but to wit; he is very, very, very, very good at killing people.
Approach
What interests you most about playing this character in this game? John thought he was finally getting peace, but finding himself in Magisteria will leave him listless and without purpose. He wants to continue living so that his wife’s memory will live on, but without Helen John doesn’t know how to live in peace, and yet he doesn’t want to go back to a life of killing. John trying to find a new purpose, or a better reason to pick up a gun than serving criminal interests, is what I hope to use as his character arc in Magisterium.
How do you see your character adjusting to/approaching the game world?
With great difficulty, for the reasons listed above, though John is motivated to try. He was told several times over the course of his crusade that he was addicted to vengeance, and anger, and his inability to let things go or properly understand the consequences of his actions (such as his murder of the Elder) lead to not only his own circumstances worsening, but also in the deaths of several good friends, as well as the High Table targeting anyone who had helped him, even if the help had come before his excommunication, and John finds it difficult to refute those accusations. He wants to try and find a new way to live, but isn’t really equipped mentally or emotionally for it, which will make living in Magisteria an interesting nut to crack, especially if he does become tempted to fall back into bad habits.
What do you see your character finding most interesting about the setting/game premise?
Mostly, just the chance to start over. While he’s alive, Helen’s memory is kept alive in him, which is incentive enough to keep going, and in Magisteria there’s no High Table, no past as the legendary Baba Yaga to haunt him, no enemies coming for him. It’s an unprecedented opportunity for peace, if he can learn to live with it, and hopefully find a reason to want to defend if threatened.
